Brucella ceti Infection in Striped Dolphins from Italian Seas: Associated Lesions and Epidemiological Data

چکیده
Brucella ceti infections have been increasingly reported in cetaceans. In this study, we analyzed all cases of B. infection detected striped dolphins stranded along the Italian coastline between 2012 and 2021 (N = 24). We focused on pathogenic role through detailed pathological studies, ad hoc microbiological, biomolecular, serological investigations, coupled with a comparative genomic analysis strains. Neurobrucellosis was observed 20 animals. The primary histopathologic features included non-suppurative meningoencephalitis 9), meningitis 6), meningoencephalomyelitis 5), which also associated typical lesions other tissues 8). Co-infections were more than half cases, mostly involving Cetacean Morbillivirus (CeMV). 24 isolates assigned primarily to sequence type 26 (ST26) 21) and, few ST49 3). multilocus typing (cgMLST) based whole genome sequencing (WGS) data showed that strains from Italy clustered into four genetically distinct clades. Plotting these clades onto geographic map suggests link their phylogeny topographical distribution. These results support as neurotropic pathogen for highlights utility WGS understanding evolution emerging pathogen.

Pathology of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) infected with Brucella ceti.
Seventeen striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) displaying swimming disorders compatible with neurological syndromes were investigated for Brucella infection. Sixteen dolphins had meningoencephalomyelitis. Serum antibody against Brucella antigen was detected in all 14 animals tested and Brucella ceti was isolated from eight out of nine animals. Brucella antigen was detected in the brain by i...

BACKGROUND Brucella ceti infections have been increasingly reported in cetaceans. Brucellosis in these animals is associated with meningoencephalitis, abortion, discospondylitis', subcutaneous abscesses, endometritis and other pathological conditions B. ceti infections have been frequently described in dolphins from both, the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. In the Mediterranean Sea, only two repor...

Assessing Brucella ceti Infections in Oregon and Washington Dolphins that Stranded with Histopathological Lesions Resembling Neurobrucellosis, 2006-2014 Tabitha George This thesis documents the presence of Brucella ceti in the Pacific white-sided dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obliquidens), striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba), and shortbeaked common dolphins (Delphinus delphis) that stranded with...
متن کاملBrucella ceti Infection in Harbor Porpoise (Phocoena phocoena)
We describe Brucella sp. infection and associated lesions in a harbor porpoise (Phocoena phocoena) found on the coast of Belgium. The infection was diagnosed by immunohistochemistry, transmission electron microscopy, and bacteriology, and the organism was identified as B. ceti. The infection's location in the porpoise raises questions of abortion and zoonotic risks.
متن کاملBrucella ceti and Brucellosis in Cetaceans
Since the first case of brucellosis detected in a dolphin aborted fetus, an increasing number of Brucella ceti isolates has been reported in members of the two suborders of cetaceans: Mysticeti and Odontoceti. Serological surveys have shown that cetacean brucellosis may be distributed worldwide in the oceans. Although all B. ceti isolates have been included within the same species, three differ...
